Ethereal Matter - Part 1

Ethereal Matter is an early-stage wellness and fitness startup in Sausalito, California, founded by designer Scott Summit. Its mission is to revolutionize how we approach fitness by blending virtual reality with dynamic physical workouts. Their first product—EVA—brings an entirely new level of immersion to exercise.

Experience Flowchart Diagram

I collaborated closely with the founder to map out the kiosk user journey, creating a flowchart that illustrated the complete process from kiosk to VR HUD. This diagram accounted for different paths for new and returning users, including:

  • A standby mode when EVA was in use

  • A quick demo path for first-time users

  • A streamlined flow for existing users to schedule short sessions

Because EVA offers both a gaming-like experience and a fitness modality, the flowchart outlined configuration steps for both pathways. It also covered VR HUD transitions and end-of-session scenarios. In the final demo, the kiosk experience demonstrated a smooth handoff from the kiosk interface to the VR HUD.

The Challenge and Context

At the outset, the founder had a working prototype of the EVA machine along with several demo experiences. The primary goal was to create an onboarding sequence guiding first-time users through scheduling a session, configuring it, and then transitioning into VR.

Specifically, the objective was to create a kiosk experience integrated into the EVA machine. We used a Windows tablet to showcase the setup flows, which then seamlessly handed off to the VR HUD for the actual EVA demo.
